Choosing a new hairstyle can be as daunting as it is exciting. From long and layered to short and choppy, and everything in between, the choices seem endless. Generally, haircuts are classified as long, medium, or short styles. Some women love the sensuality of long, flowing hair and the flexibility that having long hair allows you, although it is harder and more expensive to care for. Medium hairstyles, usually around shoulder-length or slightly longer, offer the versatility of longer hair and the polished edginess of shorter hair. Long enough to pull back into a classy updo, they can also be worn in soft, feminine styles or blunt, edgy cuts. Other women prefer unique, funky short hairstyles – pixie cuts, crops, and shorter, angled bobs cut close to the face. Shorter haircuts can be especially sexy, edgy, and are definitely eye-catching. Typically, they require more maintenance than longer hairstyles as they need to be reshaped and trimmed more often to preserve the style. There’s also the awkward “growing out stage”, a much-dreaded time for women transitioning back to longer hair.
Following the latest Hollywood trends, and some of the classics, short and medium length haircuts have recently made a comeback. Think Victoria “Posh Spice” Beckham’s daring blonde cut, Rihanna’s short, cropped, raven style, and Katie Holmes’s face-framing brunette bob (Suri’s too!) Tons of women swear by the bob cut, popularized by 1920’s flapper girls, and reinvented by Vidal Sassoon, thanks to its sexy shape, easy styling, and seamless transition from work to fun. Creative stylists have taken the classic shape and reworked it in different modern ways that flatter virtually every face shape and hair texture by adding razored edges, angled bangs, layers, and the latest celebrity favorite – the reverse, or inverted, bob. Chances are, if you ask your hairstylist for a bob today, you’ll likely end up with a more unique and flattering cut than you’d imagined.
